Ammolite, Placenticeras costatum.
This is a complete specimen of Ammolite, a gemstone derived from ammonite. The ammonite species is Placenticeras costatum. This rare specimen features the nacreous layer of an approximately 72-million-year-old ammonite, compressed and shining with red, green, and blue. It is designated as Alberta's official gemstone and called Ammolite.
Complete Ammolite specimens are often flattened by high pressure, but this specimen is partially inflated. It seems sand entered the interior during the fossilization process.
